ABSTRACT:
The 911 system, one of the crowning achievements of modern communications, is in jeopardy. Advances in technology are undermining one of its basic premises the ability to automatically identify the location of a caller dialing 911. Enterprise communications systems (both older, legacy systems as well as newer IP-based solutions) have the potential to inhibit 911 performance, imperiling the lives of the millions of people served by these systems. The severity of the threat to public safety has drawn the attention of state and federal regulators. This Avaya whitepaper looks at the technical issues, the regulatory environment, enterprise liability and other business issues as well as the steps that Avaya is taking to help address the E911 challenge to the enterprise.
